Archdeacon Averill returned by tlie express last night from a visit to Methven and Rakaia. Air J. Cook (Port Chalmers), Mr E. Geach, and Mr J.- D. McGruar, arrived in town by the express from the South lastevening. Mr District Judge Ward went South by tho express yesterday. Mr G. MeCiatchio and Mr Mclntyre were passengers by train to Culverden yesterday morning. Mr F. A. Cullen, of the local Lands and Survey Department, has been transferred to New Plymouth as Receiver of Lands Revenue. Mr F. D. S. Neave, 3D A. E. G. Rhodes, Dr. Levinge, Dr. Nedwill, Mr W. Cross, .Mr F. do C. Malet, Mr D. Wcstoura, and Air J. H. Morris left for tho South by yesterday morning's express. Mr G. W. Skjellorup (Dunedin) was a recent caller at the Tourist Bureau. Mr E. F. Walter, Mr Norman Clark (Melbourne). Mr It. 801 l (Wellington), Mr C. Dilwortn Fox, Mr H. Acton-Adams, Mr Norman Clark, and Mr F. W. Adams arrived in town yesterday. Captain Sand ford left for Ashburton yesterday morning. Mr and Mrs James Newport (Nelson) aro on a visit to Christchurch. Mr H. F. Reece, President of the Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union, is now on a visit to the North Island in connection with the business of the meat distributing company now being formed, and expects to be away two or tliree weeks. The assistant house-surgeon at the Christchurch Hospital (Dr. Bett) will be leaving at >.ie c-iul of November. Dr. Livesay, now in charge of Bottle Lake Hospital, ho an applicant for the position. Mr A. D. Riley, director of the Wellington Technical School, resigns his position from January Ist next, in order to enter private business. Mr Arthur Jamieson, of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, is recovering from his recent illness, and intends going to the Convalescent Home for a month.
Nurse Heaven, of the Christchurch Hospital, has completed her training, and been awarded her certificate. Nurses de Veaux and Warnock have received promotion. Mr Thomas Hinchclitte, Clerk of the Magistrate’s Court- at Port Chalmers, retires after fortv-One ye,us’ sendee.
Mr R. B. Morris, who has been appointed chief clerk of the Christchurch Postal Department, originally came from the drill City, and was transferred from there to Auckland, and then to Wellington about 12 years ago. He is exceedingly popular in tho service, and ho and his family are enthusiastic in musical matters. Mr Skipwith, from Auckland, arrived in Christchurch yesterday. Mr W- Johnston Herbert, of Wellington, is at present on a visit to Christchurch.
Mr Simon, of Dunedin, is in town. Mr Perry, of Gisborne, who nas been on a visit to Christchurch, left for the North by the steamer last night. Mr and Mrs Lyon left by the express for Orari yesterday. In a private letter received by yesterday s mail Sir John Hall states t-liat he expects to leave England on November sth, and hopes to land in New Zealand before liis 80th birthday.
