PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr W. R. McLaren (Timaru), Jlr A. B. Knight (Windwhistle), Mr J. Morris, and Mr and Mrs Birch arrived in town last evening.

Mr E. C. Collins, Mr and Mrs R. Bleu-nerbasi-ett, and Mr*R. M. Smith were passengers from the South by last night's express.

Miss Ewart, matron of the Timaru Hospital, left for Dunedin by the express yesterday.

Dr. R. W. Anderson, of Sydenliam, returned to town from Akaroa last evening.

Mr F. W. Delamain returned from Hanmer Springs by last evening's North train, and Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., from Cheviot. Our Wellington correspondent telegraphs: —lt is understood that Mr Nolan, for some time Mr Justice Conolly's associate, will act in a similar capacity to Mr Justice Chapman. At the Ashburton Police Station yesterday, Constable Moore, who is leaving for Lyttekon, was presented with a silvermounted pipe by his fellow members of the force. The presentation was made by Sergeant Barlow. Mr F. J. Kidson, of Nelson, who has been in England for three years past, is now professor of elocution at lung's College, London.

Mr J. C. Maddison left for Wellington by yesterday's steamer. Mr A. W. Rutherford, M.H.R., with Mrs and Miss Rutherford, went by the North train yesterday, and Mr Rutherford will remain at Mendip Hills till Thursday, when ho returns to AVellington. Miss M. E. Bush, of this city, who is at present in England having her voice trained, is staying with Madame Bells Cole, "The Chimes," Redcliffe Gardens, South Kensington. Dr. Marshall (Otago School of Mines;, Mr J. Lambie, Mr G. H. Mac Ewan, Air G. Joachim, and Mr M. Morrison left for the South by the express yesterday morning.

Mr and Mrs Barclay (Wellington), Mr Duffel, and Mr Smithson are in town. Mr F. Waymoutli, who has been on a visit to the North Island hot lakes, returns to tliis city to-morrow. Mr J. Mills, Invercargill, was a recent caller at the local agency of the Tourist Department. Dr. James F. Duncan, son of Mr I*. Duncan, of this city, has resigned his position of House Surgeon at -Macclesfield Hospital, and intends further prosecuting his medical studies in Loudon. The residents of Woodend presented Mr and Mrs W. Barrett with a marble clock and silver-mounted biscuit 'barrel, on the occasion of their marriage. Mr P. Petrie, sen. and Mr T. Scott made the presentations.

Mr W. H. Wise was the recipient of presentations from the choir and congregation, and from ex-members of the choir of the Linwood Wesleyan Church, at a social gathering on Thursday evening. The Rev. xi. J. Murray made the presentations.

Mr and Mrs H. J. Matthews (Dunedin), Mr Hannah, Mr Mansen. Mr A. Wiffin, and Mr A. Fuller are-visiting Hanmer. We hear that Mr and Mrs James Embling are about to return to New Zealand, having taken a cabin in the Paparoa, leaving London on November sth. The Governor arrived in Auckland yesterday for the purpose of meeting the Committee of the Veterans' Home Bazaar, with whom he held an important conference in the afternoon. His Excellency intends to return to Wellington on Monday. Mr C. H. Mills, Commissioner of Customs, is at present confined to n» bed.
