PERSONAL ITEMS.

Colonel Hume, Inspector of Prisons, arrived from the South by the express yesterdav, and left for the North by the same evening's steamer. Mr S. McKenzie and Mr R. McLennaa and Mrs McLennan went South by the express yesterday morning. Mr and Mrs Matthews left for Hanmer Springs yesterday morning. Dr. and Mrs F. Fitchett, Mr and Mrs D. McLaren, Mr H. H. Sawyers, Mr M. Eichelbaum (Wellington), and Mr G. Guthrie (Colombo), arrived in town yesterday morning. Mr A. W. Rutherford, M.H.8., together with Mrs Rutherford and Miss Rutherford, are in town. Dr. Sinclair Guim (Kaikoura) is at prosent in Christchurch. Mr G. H. MacEwnn, Mr G. Joachim, Mr C. M. Allan, Mr Hanson, Mr McFarlane, and Mr F. H. Lance are in town. Mr and Mrs Charles Parker, 'who have been on a short holiday trip South, returned by the express last night. Mr and Mrs Cookson, Ashburton, left yesterday on an extended tour through the North Island. Mr J. J. Grandi, of Timaru, has resigned from the Commission of the Peace. Out of thirteen applications for the position of junior probationer at the Ashburton Hospital, Nurse Cooke, the present fever ward nurse, was appointed. Major R. W. Ohaffey, Highfield, Mr H. F. Lance (Cust), and Mr Macfarlane (Kaiwarra), were passengers to town by last evening's North train. Messrs H. J. Otley and W. Jacques, the delegates from the Canterbury Builders' Association to the Federal Council of Builders, to be held this year in Dunedin, leave for the South on Monday. The Northern delegates to the Conference are expected to_ arrive in this city on Sunday. Mr and Mrs P. Nathan (Wellington) and Mrs E. Reid were passengers by the northern train yesterday for the Hanmer Sanatorium. Mr and Mrs R. C. Bishop are expected to arrive from their tour in England, etc., on Friday next, from Sydney.
