AUCKLAND v SOUTH CANTERBURY. This match was played at Temuka yesterday afternoon, when the Aucklanders veil by 10 points (a goal from a made and two tries) to nil. The weather had been fine in South Canterbury for some days until Tuesday, when a drizzling ram from the oast set iu, and continued oil and on until aftar the game was ended, mating the ground heavy, and spoiling the attend, ance. Tho game was played in a friendly spirit, but tihs onlookers were rather partial, applauding their own men loudly for their good play, while, any brilliancy by the visitors was allowed to go unnoticed. The following were the teams:—South Canter-bury-Backs, E. Horgan, J. Joe, W. Grant, J. \laifanev, J. O'Loary, and D. inedhnder; forwards, Shiers, E. Husband, Mara,, D. Horgan, Budd, Scott, Ureaney, Gaifaney, and Harris. Auckland—Backs, !•;. Sutherland, Asher, W. Harrison. Mc Kenzie, 11. McGregor, R. Phelan, and P. Ge.rra.rd; forwards, Doran, Gallagher, F. Smith, J. Long, A. Lewis. S. Nicholson, E. Eaton, and H. Hay ward. Auckland kicked off from the south end, tilie wind not favouring either team, a« it blew directly across the ground. The ball soon found its way to the Auckland (Blues) twenty-live, and a kick by Scot* forced the visitors. After the Mck out give and take play was -witnessed in neutral territory until the Blue forwards got on a passing run, in which Nicholson, Gallagher, and Long participated, the last-named scoring, Eaton failing to convert. The visitors soon returned to the attack, and being awarded a free kick, Raton had n shot at goal, tho ball falling a little short. Kicks by Gaifaney and Friedlander then shifted the play to the other end, and O'Leary kicked the ball into touch in goal. Even play followed, and then the visitors got on a passing run, a good chance of scoring being lost through McGregor holding the ball too long. E. Horgan relieved his side with a lucky .kick, but the Aucklanders scon returned, and Long marking within the local twenty-five, Eaton kicked a. good goal. The Blues soon had their opponents in trouble again, and the latter were kept busy defending for most of the remainder of the spell. On crossing over, a run by Asher quickly took play to the home team's quartevs, and for '.some time the game was carried on between the tatter's goal line and the halfway flag. At length the Auckland forwards'rushed the ball to the South Canterbury line, Mid Aslter following up fa st "nearly got over. A scrum was ordered five yards out, and Gerrard getting possession passed to Absolum, who had no difficulty in scoring, Eaton's attempt at goal being a failure, although the. wind just missed bringing it back over the bar in time. The' remainder of the game was fairly even, there being no further score. The Aucklanders at times had the ball right on their opponents' line, but the home team never allowed it to remain there long, and the Greens also had the Blues on the defensive a few times. Mr R. W. Barry was referee.
