Mr and Mrs F. S. Ballin and Mr D. L. Patterson left for the South by the express yesterday.
Mr and Mrs Howard left for the West Coast yesterday. Mr A. Wifßn left for Hanmer yesteriay.
Mr and Mrs S. Mackenzie, Mr and Mrs K. MoLennan, Mr A. H. Mackay, Mr T. Metekingi, Mr C. Tanner (Melbourne), Mr T. Bulock, Mr W. R. Gordon, Mr W. H. Montgomery, Mr Hardy (Rak'aia), Mrs W. Macfarlane, Miss Maciarlane, Mr Reeves, Mr W. G. Douglass, Mr Picardc, Mr James' Allan, and Miss Allan arrived in town j esterday. Mr Huston Curlett and Miss V. Curlett were passengers for Fairlie by yesterday morning's express. Mr W. B. Fisher, of Wellington, has received word by the San Francisco mail that he has been elected a member of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and his Majesty lias been pleased to approve of the appointment. The decoration is conferred in recognition of fourteen years of service on behalf of the St. John Ambulance Association at Dunedin and Wellington., and Mr Fisher has been notified that the royal patent under tho seal of the order is on the way to the colony.
The Dunedin City Council, at last night's meeting, on the motion of the Mayor, unanimously passed a resolution congratulating Mr P. It. Chapman on his appointment to the Supremo Court .Bench, and recording its appreciation of tho very valuable services rendered to the city during the many years he wan connected as a partner with the firm of city solicitors.
The Ashburton A. and P. Association has appointed Mr J. McLeod, late of Brisbane, as. veterinary surgeon for the Ashburton district. ;
Among the visitors to Hanmer at present are:— J Dr. and Mrs Guthrie, Miss Guthrie, (Mr L. Cleghorn, Mr and Mrs McKinney (New Brighton), Mr and Mrs Alcorn (Ashburton), Mrs Plunket, and Mr F. H. Byrne.
Mr John Orr, accompanied by Miss Winnie Orr and Miss Shearman, "arrived in Ashburton yesterday, after a trip to Australia.
Mr F. E. Bauine, M.H.R., was presetted at Auckland yesterday with a gold watch and chain, subscribed by a few of his friends. Mr Baume disclaimed having, as yet, merited the present politically, but said ho was proud to receive it as a testimony of friendship. Ho did not regard the meeting as a political demonstration, but as purely a friendly reception. Tho Rev. George D. Cox, Baptist minister of Oamaru, has accepted 'be unanimous call of the Church at Lincoln to become its pastor, and commenced his ministry last Sunday. Mr j. Pow, of Fernihurst, was a passenger by last evening's north train to town.
Messrs Williams (Mount Benger), C. DanipierCrossley and J. Douglas (Waikari), 'H. F. Reeee (Rangiora), F. H. Courage (Seadown), and A. W. Byrch (Mount Brown) wc»e passengers north by last evening's train. Our Parliamentary correspondent states that 3tr Seddon has been in indifferent health for some days, having been troubled by a cold, which has left behind it a slight bronchial trouble. Mr Eldred R'ercus, M.A., who for some months past has been in charge of the Baptist Church at Nelson, will shortly leave for the Argentine Republic to enter the mission field there.
