MUTILATING THE DEAD.

CABLE NEWS.

DEFENCE OF DR, SMITH.

“THE INTERESTS OF SCIENCE.”

CHARGES AGAINST THE GOVERN-

AIENT.

United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.

(Received September 15th, 11.31 p.m.) ADELAIDE, September 15.

At the enquiry into the charges against Dr. Ramsay Smith, the Adelaide Coroner, Sir Josiah Symon, made a slashing address for the defence. Kb declared that the charge against Dr. Smith was the outcome of malice and spite. Tho real reason for the charge was that one or two persons wanted to get rid of him by book or by crook. After paying a tribute to Dr. Smith’s eminent efficiency as a medical man, and the esteem in which he was held by the Government, he said it was under the direction of the Attorney-General that he removed the skulls and heads, and took human specimens. He fired rifles into dead bodies iii order to give evidence as a Government medical expert. In other similar ways he had qualified himself for the unwarranted duties that the Government imposed upon him. What Dr. Smith had done had been done with absolute openness in the interest of the Government as his employers, and in the interests of science. Sir Josiah charged the Government with the basest ingratitude against Dr. Smith.
