CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION.
The Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union met in the Clarendon Hotel last evening. Present—Messrs G. H. Mason (chairman), W.- Walton, J. R. Evans, J. C. Adams, S. Orchard, H. B. Gray, H. C. Harrison (hon. treasurer), and W. G. Garrard (hon. secretary).
With regard to the Committee's request that the New Zealand Rugby Union should apply to the English Union in order that others than officials should be empowered to report flagrant breaches of rules, the New Zealand Union replied that the point was covered by by-laws 22 and 23 of that Union, and due notice would have to be given of the matter, therefore, for the next annual meeting. Mr Walton stated that he thought the local authorities should make the alteration of their own accord, with the sanction of the English Union or without it. The matter was held over for the present.
The New Zealand Rugby Football Union also forwarded a negative reply from the English Union, to the question as to whether a player could replace another who was injured. The High School Old Boys asked that arrangements should be made to enable the Nelson College Old Boys to play them in Christchurch on August 29th. It was to promise £5 towards the match, and the contribution will probably be added to afterwards.
Notice was received that the Hawke's Bay team would arrive in time to play their match against Canterbury on August 23rd, and that the Wairarapa team would be in Christchurch on Friday, August 7th, and would leave for Dunedin on Monday, 10th. The North Canterbury Football Club WTote, complaining of the inconvenience and expense to which they had been put by the decision of the Union's referee, after they had come to Christchurch to play the Boys' High School, that the ground and weather were both unsuitable for play. The Union voted the Club 30s to cover their expenses in travelling.
Mr Harrison was appointed manager to travel with the Junior representative team, and it was resolved that if one of the Selection Committee wished to go also, the Union would pay his expenses. A claim for £7, one for £5, and two for £2, in connection with the accidentfund, were recognised in the case of players who have been incapacitated by accidents on the football field. The claims were at the rate of 20s a week, for the term during which the applicants had been put to monetary loss through their incapacitation.
