THE MAN WHO LOST HIS NERVE.

One incident transpired which raised tha hopes—which had begun to droop "like lilies tired" —of the strike sympathisers inside the * station and out. It had been decided to run a train to Caultfield, starting from the platform usually used for Camberwell trains. A driver who had formerly been in the service was in charge of tiie engine. About forty passengers got on board. The train started all right, but when it had got to the end of the platforai, it was pulled up with m bump and a jolt which scared the live« out of those on board. Grabbing his hat and coat, tho driver jumped off the footplate, and started to walk down the platform. A crowd fihat was lining the wall of Flinders street cheered him vigorously., "Arn't you going to take her on?" 'twas asked! as he walked slowly along towards the exit gates, with his* head bent forward. "No," he said, wearily, without looking at his interrogator, "I've lost my nerve." His looks bore out his statement. However, the train got out all right, one <_! tho inspectors taking it on, and tho train ran quite smoothly out of the station.
