I quite agree with what you say above. Now let uK t»ee how it leads if we substitute ••people - ' for "the people." The question at issue is whether people are to be supreme in the management of thetr own property, or whether they are to be dominated by their own servants employed in their trades and businesses Utteriv regardless of the rights of people, who will be called upon to make good any deficit in the working of the said trades and lusine.«se*i. Further, if democracy is to succeed and hold its own iv these r.-}w countries, it must at all hazards take care not to put its trade I'i'.d commerce under the heels of the employees who help carry it on. and to allow them to become the mast era. What trade ar.d commerce require in these new countries are strong Cover.im.nts under strong P.einiers, who are determined it shall not be trampled under foot by the new Unionism. The time ha« conic, however, for tin emphatic deolar.ition on the part of people that they mean to manage their own property, and do not intend to put themselves under the domination of their own servant". As I have nothing to do with trade or commerce my remarks are quite disinterested.—Yours, etc., C.W.B. Christchurch, May 16th, 1903.
