THE GREATER CHRISTCHURCH COUNCIL STAFF.
THE COMMITTEE'S RECOMMENDA- , TTONS. At the meeting of the Council of Greater Christchuroh last, night, the Finance and Departmental Committee made the following recommendations: —That Mr H. R. Smith be appointed Town Clerk and City Treasurer at a salary of £600 per annum; that Mr J. F. Matthews be appointed Assistant Town Clerk at a salary of £250; that Mr James Anderson, late Town Clerk to tlie Borough of Linwood, be appointed city accountant at a salary of £250 per annum; that Mr J. S. Neville be appointed collector at a salary of £225 per annum. That the following inspectors be appointed:—Mr Wm. Smith, to be chief inspector and inspector of licensed vehicles and buildings, etc., at a salary of £175 per annum; Messrs C. B. Massey, B. Throp, and E. C. Preston to be assistant •insoectors at a salary of £156 per annum each; that Mr L. Atkinson be appointed junior clerk and typieb at a salary of £75 per annum; that"a lady shorthand clerk and typist be appointed at a sa!ary of £60 per annum ; that Mr A. D. Dohson be appointed city surveyor at a salary of £500 per annum; that Mr C. Dawe be appointed draughtsman in the surveyor's office at a of £125 per annum; that the' late Town Clerks of the Boroughs of Sydenham and St. Albans, Messrs C. Allison and J. H. Morley, be given six months' notice that their services will not be required; tha. the junior clerks to the late Borough Councils ot Linwood, St. Albans, and Sydenham be give<n one month's notice that their services will not be required. The Committee pointed out that the staff, as recommended, had been made as small as possible, only two additional officers, one a junior, having been appointed to the Town Clerk's department, with the exception of the.extra inspector, who was urgently required for the suburban Wards. In the City Surveyor's department Mr Dawe had been assisting as a temporary draughtsman for several montlis past. The Committee would .close the late Borough Council offices and centralise the business as soon as possible. The Committee recommended that Mr A. Crabb, the abattoir manager, and Mr L. Birks, the electrical engineer, be confirmed in their respective positions upon the same conditions. The Comniittea recommended that all outstanding rates be sued for except such as it considers should be held! over for further consideration. Tlie report was adopted after a ehor / .' discussion.
