POLAR EXPLORATION.
NEW ARCTIC EXPEDITION. A GERMAN RELIEF SHIP. United Press Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received May 9th, 9.18 a.m.) LONDON, May 8. Scholl - and Anochutz's German Arctic expedition will utilise a submarine boat, and a wireless telegraphy station is being erected in Spitsbergen. The expedition is also carrying wireless telegraphy apparatus with it. (Received May 9th, 8.41 a.m.) BERLIN, May 8. Tlie Reichstag has voted funds to purc_ase a whaler to relieve the German Antarctic expedition.
On April 16th last the steamer Stassfurt brought to Sydney from Kerguelen Island four members of the German scientific party sent there in connection with the German Antarctic Expedition. The party originally consisted of five, but one died during the eighteen months' residence on the island. Tbe survivors suffered great hardship. The future movements of the expedition are uncertain. So far as Kerguelen Island is concerned, iib has completed its work, which is purely scientific, especially in respect to wind and temperature observations and geological research. The German Government proposed to despatch another South Polar expedition in Decernfoer to pick up the party on the steamer Gauss, wluch, when she left Germany last year, intended to stay till next year. The whaling vessel will probably start from Capetown. If the Gauss is not picked up the relief ship will replenish the food depots in the ice regions.
