THE VOLUNTEERS.

Members of the Corps belonging to the No. 1 Battalion of the North Canterbury Mounted Rifles are reminded that the competition for the Snow Challenge Shield takes place on May 9th. The competition promises to be an interesting one, and will be held probably on the Port Hills, and firing will be at three unknown ranges. ■Mustering 61 strong out of a possible 65, the Christ's College Cadets, under Captuin Stringer, were inspected yesterday afternoon by Colonel Porter, officer commanding the district. The corps was put through physical drill, rifle exercises, company drill, and skirmishing, and in all of these, 'departments showed commendable .smartness and proficiency. Colonel Porter presented medals for shooting to the following, the names being in order of merit:—Private O\ H. S. Overton, Ser-geant-Bugler D. Holdenrese, Private T. Fox, Corporal-Bugler J. G. Collins, Privates J. C. Ellis, C. G. Harper, Hayhuret, P. Egan, Anderson,,'!. Rhodes, Corporal W. S. Lindsay, and Private E. N. C. Staveley. The inspecting officer expressed great satisfaction with the standard of the corps' drill, and stated that it would not be his fault if they did not receive their new belts and side-arms (in place of those recently condemned as worn out) within as short a time ac possible. Cheers were given for Colonel Porter, and for the.company's instructor, StafF-Sergeant-Major Farthing. Lieut. Browne (Cavalry Instructor) was present with the officer-com-manding the district. On Monday night a parade of No. 5 Company, New Zealand Garrison) Artillery (late Lyttelton Naval Artillery) was held for gunnery instruction. Sixty-tihre* were present, and Captain Curtis was in command. After parade the company held a general meeting, nt which Mr P. R. Fordham was elected lieutenant, and Gunner A. Day waa appointed second-class petty officer.
