NEW BRIGHTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
■» The New Brighton Borough Council met on Monday. In the absence of the Mayor (Mr George Mclntyre), Cr. Winny was in the chair. Leave of absence was granted to the Mayor on' account of ill-health. The secretary to the Christchurch Tramway Board having written stating that the Board was desirous of having the tramway rate collected by the various local bodies, and that the Board would pay £5 per cent, for the collection of such rates, it was resolved to reply that the Council would collect the rates at the commission stated. The Treasury Department advised that £500, being the second instalment on account of the loan of £3000, had been paid to the Council's credit at the Bank ol New Zealand. The secretary to the Christchurch Drainage Board forwarded a special order levying a rate of jths of a penny in the £ on all the rateable property in tbe borough, subject to'the drainage rate. The returning officer reported that Mr C. H. Winny was the only candidate for the office of (Mayor, and that he had therefore been declared duly elected. The town "clerk reported the receipts for rates since lost meeting £6 9b lOd. The dr. balance on the general account .was £280, and the cr. balance on the loan account wis £502 3s Bd. The foreman's report dealing with the works carried out in the borough since last meeting was read and approved. The joint report of the Finance and Works Committee on the remuneration to be allowed to the borough engineer was held over for consideration ot tho next meeting. The consideration of the tenders for the formation of James street extension was deferred till the next meeting of the Council. The Council adjourned till Tuesday next.
