CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The committee of the Chamber of Commerce met on' Monday, Mr A. H. Turnbull, President, in the chair. A letter was received from the Premier stating that there were no funds at the disposal of the Government for the purpose of defraying the expenses of delegates to the congress of Chambers of Commerce of the Empire, to be held in Montreal. A prospectus- of the Imperial Food Supplies Company was received. The secretary of the General Post Office, Wellington, wrote in reply to the letter from the Chamber asking that a weekly mail service be arranged via Suez, stating that the Union Steam Ship Company were unable to guarantee that Friday woitd be the regular day of departure from Wellington. It was decided to ask the Government to subsidise tlie steamer leaving Wellington on the Friday week following the departure of the San Francisco mail. The Auckland Chamber sent a telegram advising that the conference of Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand had Ix-en postponed until May loth. The Melbourne and Brisbane Chambers of Commerce wrote asking for support in obtaining a larger share of business for the Pacific cable.
