FIRST MARCONI NEWSPAPER.
A copy of the first newspaper mode up solely of telegrams flashed through the air by the Marconi system was brought into port by the Etruria (says the "New York World"). The issuing of the Etruria's newspaper, little and unpretentious, but tho leaflet from which the full-grown ocean journalism will soon develop, was accomplished through a contract between Reuters Agency and the Cunard line. By a most appropriate coincidence Signor Marconi -himself happened to be a passenger on the Cunarder, and at, breakfast on February 7th, while the ship was in the Channel, found a copy of the maiden Marconigram at his plate. At mid— ght on February 6th, when the Etruria was about seventy miles off the Irish coast, the wireless operator, E. S. Hughes, "picked up" a Marconi station, and received in a few minutes a despatch of 120 words from Reuters, dated "Rothbury." At 2 a._. an edition of 400 copies was ready for distribution. The newspaper was a single sheet, with text a column wide, and about a stick and a half of matter. A copy was laid under the plate of each of the 201 passengers, while other copies were distributed among the crew, and a reserve supply kept for souvenir hunters. Many passengers asked for additional copies for friends, and requests for them came to the ship at Liverpool from all parts of Great Britain. Signor Marconi kept a large bunch of them.
