A SLANDER REFUTED
A very nasty little slander against women of to-day has been refuted by Sir Frederick Treves, who says that intoxication is not a vice of upper-class women. It is so easy to spread a slander of this sort and so hard to check it. The malicious person has merely to hint at such a thing and the accusation spreads like wildfire, proof being the very last thing asked for in the like cases. Sir Frederick has publicly denied that the habit of intoxication is spreading in the higher ranks of English women. The cause for the greatly exaggerated statements about women's drinking is that women are seen to drink monintoxicating liquors than of yore. If they want, a glass of wine they take it opsaly at dinner, or a glass of ale or what not. Jt -used to be considered vulgar for a woman to eat at all in public, and as for drinking, that had to be demo m strictest privacy.
