Lieut. -Colonet Morland's expedition to Northern Nigeria wag highly successful. Three thousand fibrsemen and ten thousand footmen, who surrendered at Kano, are returning to their homes, being satisfied with British assurances. Colonel Morland's march to Sokoto was unopposed, the greatest obstacle being the scarcity .of water. The King and Mr Chamberlain liave congratulated Sir F. Lugard, High Commissioner of Northern Nigeria, on the result of the expedition. The expedition which has been operating in Northern Nigeria consisted of a force of over 1000 native soldier?, accompanied by no leas than 54 British officers and civilians, which was despatched against, the recalcitrant 'Emir of Kano. Northern Nigeria is a territory one-third the size of India, containing many millions of inhabitants, and practically ield for Great Britain by a staff of civil and military officials, of whom the total number amounts to an average, of 165. The opposition of various Emirates, for a. long time lialf concealed, was recently in the case of Kano openly declared. The "Emir closed his trade road* 'to the South, and armed a body of 10.000 men in preparation for conflict with the British. The latter ihave succeeded in reducing Kaco to submission, and in showing the Emir that British authority cannot be defied with impunity.
