A MEN-OF-WAR BOAT RACE.

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) WELLINGTON, March 18. To-day great interest was evinced throughout the fleet in the race for Admiral Fanshawe's Gup. Every kind of boat that could raise a sail was enterod f/w the contest, eaclt vet-eel in the Squadron .sending out several representatives. About thirty boats contested the race, which was over a nine mile course. • It was a handicap event in service rig. each boat carrying its full complement of men and all gear. Interest largely centred in the Archer's whrler, commanded by Captain Rolleaton, as- the latter had already won Admiral Beaumont's Cup and Lady'lWsey's Cup, and 03 it proved, this boat was first to get home, followed by the Lizard's whaler (in command of Captain Glossop). As the Archer's was the longer boat, the Lizard.-, won on time allowance. Captain Rolleston is a New Zealander, and was related to the late Hon. W. Rolleston. The Roya' Arthur's pinnae* (tinder Lieutenant Oliver) just beat the flagship's launch (sailed by Captain Lumeden) for third place. The Squadron will arrive at Lvttelton to-morrow morning at 8 o'clock." The Ringarooma, the Phccbe, the Archer, and the Karakatta will be moored inside the moles. Mr Seddon has telegraphed to Mr A. W. Rutherford, M.H.R., that the men-o'-war will bo open to visitors next Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday, between the hours of 1 and 4 p.m. School Committees should arrange for excursions trains accordingly. Tlie Board of Education are proposing to make arrangements for free excursions to enable school children to visit Uie fleet, either on Tuesday or Wednesday next. The Board is now requesting chairmen of School Committees to furnish the number of children of the upper standards who will avail themselves of the opportunity not later than to-morrow morning. The secretary of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr C. Hood. Williams) received the following telegram yesterday from the secretary to the Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Fanahawe:—"The Squadron will, arrive at Lyttelton on Friday morning, about 8 a.m. The- Ringarooma, Ph-rbe. Archer and Karrakatta will go into the inner harbour, to berths selected by the port officer. His Excellency will be clad to see the Chairman and members of the Lyttelton Harbaur Board on board the Royal Arthur at any time between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m."
