EXPLOSIVES BY POST.
THE YALGOO OUTRAGE.
AN ARREST MADE.
United Press Aiaociation—By Electric Telegraph—Copyrijhi. PERTH, March 17. Excitement has been caused in Yalgoo by the arrest of Richard John Carlyon, a well-known resident, and own«r of the Quin Mine, in connection with the explosion of the infernal machine in the Yalgoo Post Office, which injured Mr Lownes. Carlyon was charged with sending an explosive box through tho Post Office to Solomon Lownes, with the intention of doing him bodily harm. He was remanded on heavy bail.
At Y'algoo, early on the morning of February 13th, the postmaster noticed an untidy-looking parcel wrapped up loosely with a piece of newspaper. Ho found it contained a neat packet carefully sealed at both ends, addr«__ed to Mr Lownes. a well-known business man. inbeautiful handwriting, apparently that of i lady. The .postmaster saw that the packet had been posted contrary to the regulations, and bore only the packet rate. He shook it close to his var. and came tj the conclusion that it contained dv... Knowing that Mr Lownes acted as agent for prospectors, he- instructed an ax .stunt to surcharge the packet and register it. _lr Lownes called for the packet himself to sign and pay for it. . Tlie p ue_mu»-:<r stepped into the lobby to explain why the packet had been surcharged, and Mr Lownes stepped behind « paitition to speak to someone, and. then tlie explosion took place. The postmaster then saw the assistant with his clothes smoking, and Mr Lownes lying in a pool of blood, calling out, "That is tlie work of my enemy. I knew it would come. He threatened' to do for me." The assistant was standing inside the delivery window. Particles of flesh warn blown through the window and adhered to the walls, and the lobby wa_ bespattered with blood and flesh. It was found that Mr Lownes'e left hand and forearm were literally blown to pieces, and the right hand was slightly injured. The assistant was badly burnt about the hands and arms, and has lost his hearing. A special train took Mr Lownes to the Magnet Hospitail as soon as possible. Mr Lownes had his arm amputated. Part of .the handwriting; on the packet was afterwards found and handed to the police, and also pieces of the tin box which contained the explosive.
