Mr G. G. Stead returned to town from a visit to liis station at Waikari yesterday morning. Mr Job Vile, M.H.R., is at present in town, raid intends visiting Cheviot and the Midland Railway. -~ Mr R. McNab, M.H.R., Mr F. R. Flatman, M.H.R., Mr J. McLachlon, M.H.R., Mr R. H. Dunlop, Mr and Mrs Grimwade (Croydon, England), Mr Grimwade (Melbourne), Mr J. W. Henton. Mr and Mrs Yates, Mr and Mrs W. Hamilton, and Mr G. Bisset went South by the express yesterday niornifcg. Mr and Mrs PatUilo, Mr W- Considence, and Mr J. H. Healy, Mra Healy, and Miss Healy left for Hammer by yesterday mornings Mr J. P- Moire, Gloucester, England, was a recent caller at the local agency of the Tourist Department. Mr Grimwade, of Croydon, England, Home director of Messrs Kempthorne, Pros»er and Co., accompanied by Mrs Grimwade, has just completed a pleasurable tour of the colony, having visited Rotorua, the Buller, and Otira Gorges, and other parts of the country. ' . Rev. C. H. Laws and Mrs Laws arrived from tho South by the express last night. Mr J. C. Mad_Ji___i and Mr C L. Russell left for the North by last night's steamer. Mr Arthur Little (Wellington), Mr A. L. Brydone (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs J. Ross (Dunedin), Mr D. McMillan, Mr H. Neill, and Mr D. Todd are in town. Mr Hone Heke, M.H.R., who returned to Wellington with the N_tire Minister from ft visit to the Waikato Maori settlements last week, is seriously ill in Wellington. He is suffering from pleurisy. Mr' Dan Reese left yesterday by the Rimutaka for Wellington, en route for London. _ , . ~ Mr and Mre J. F. Roberts and family leave to-day for Wellington, to join the Cori__hks for London, and will be absent for about twelve months.
Mr and Mrs M. Harris leave to-morrow for Sydivev, en route to South Africa.. A social gathering was held in Mr Cobsar's granary, Tai Tapu, an Friday, when Mr L. Pegler, who is leaving the district, was presented by Mr'E. Rydte, on behalf of tlie givers, with a silver watch suitably inscribed. The programme consisted of iniiscelkuiwnis items, Measre Roesler Bros. providing the music. Mre undi Miss Seddon leave Hanmer Springs this morning, and will arrive at Addington this evening. Mr S. G. Raymond, a principal in the firm of Smithson and Raymond, solicitors, Timaru, left Timaru last evening with Mrs Raymond on a trip to the Old Land. Prior to "his departure from Timaru, Mr Raymond was entertained by a rcpreJsentative gathering of citizens, and given tv very cordial send-off.
At a meeting of the No-license League, held in Timaru on Monday night, the Rev. J. N. Buttle, President of the. Lc-lgue, was presented with a, handsome dressingcase and travelling bag combined, prior to his departure for New Plymouth, and in recognition of tbe service ho has rendered the temperance cause during his stay in Timaru.
Mr W. Evans, chairman of the Timaru Harbour Board, was yesterday waited on by tho Mayor of Timaru and several citizens, and presented with a largely-signed petition asking him to consent to nomination for a further iterm of office. Mr Evans signified his intention of complying with the request, and he was heartily thanked for his favourable reply.
A farewell social was tendered to Mr and Mrs A. Orr and _ l_s W. Baxter in the Ashburton Presbyterian Church on Monday evening, prior to their departure for the Old Country. The Rev. G. B. Inglis presided. On behalf of the congregation, Mr Inglis presented Mrs Orr with a silver hot water jug, Mrs Baxter with a silver card case and vinaigrette ,and Mr Orr with a morocco leather bound pocket-bctok, as a small token of the esteem in wjjich they were held by the congregation. Mr Orr replied on behalf of himself and Mm Orr. and air Baxter replied on Mrs Baxter's behalf. In the earlier part of the evening Mr W. Brocx handed to Mr Orr a travelling rug and asked him to convey the same to Mi R. W. Inglis in the Old Country. Constable Irwin has been transferred to Timaru to replace Constable Perneskie, transferred to this city.

Mr W. Rollitt, in response to a deputation whioh waited on- ban on Monday, has consented to stand' for another term as Mayor of Sumner.
Mr Alfred 1 Baldey, who it is understood will be called to "the Legislative Council, while never very prominently before public notice, has served quietly and continuously on several public bodies. He is now a member of the Otago Education Board, Land Board, and Board of the Otago School Commissioners, and formerly occupied a seat in the Southland County Council. He was also a director of the J. G. Ward Farmers' Association. Mr Baldey has followed farming pursuits at Ryal Bush since the early days, and is widely known throughout the whole district.
