CHARGE AGAINST AN ELECTION REGISTRAR.
(ritESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, March 17. At the inquiry into the charges against John King, Registrar of Electors, Mr Spedaing, representing the Temperanoe party, stated that when the main roll was issued early in November, he found that of 426 names lie had sent in for the city up to the week before the issue of the roll 380 were not enrolled; for Grey Lynn, out of 150 names he sent in 126 were not enrolled , for Eden, of 108 names _ent in 95 were not enrolled. King subsequently explained that he required time, and that arrangements were made for printing, and they would appear in the supplementary roll. Witness visited the Registrar's office immediately after the issue of the writ, but could get no satisfaction as to whether the. names were enrolled. When the supplementary roll appeared many of the names left off the main roll were still omitted. Mr King said much bitterness and trouble might have been avoided had. Mr Speeding looked over the rolls before sending in claims. Mr Haselden said tliat trouble might also have been wived had Mr King been a little more generous to those Keeking information. An examination of the list of names was proceeding with Mr King producing the application forms bearing his memoranda- Up till tlie adjournment sixty-eight names had beeii dealt with. In a few oases it was shown that nanus were on the Grey Lynn roll, but Mr Spedding explained that "these names were included by error, owing to the hurry in which the list was compiled. Of the" remainder (all of wham had applied for enrolment, and not for transfer) all but one were found to be on the rolls of the city, or other electorates, and out of thirty-three persons whose cas*s were dealt -with prior to the luncheon adjournment, thirty-one had voted at last election in the respective districts for which they were enrolled. In the one exception referred to. it was shown that the first application was rejected as being invalid, owing to the applicant being under age when the signed, but a second claim had been put in a, few days later, when the applicant came of age. He was not enrolled, and there was a discrepancy between the statements of Mr .Spedding and Mr King as to the exact time when the claim was lodged.
