It is of considerable length and breadth .or a two-seated car and J___ld steer steadily. Tbe weight complete is between 7 and *-?**•; and ample margin for strength and durability. Tho engine is a single cylinder of _J h.p., ana Is sJtuarted in front. . v , „«„«i friction "And now as to tho special features. The motor shaft carries qlutoh. but between it and tho engine is situate a very neat and simple «!?£ From tho clutch the drive is 'taken 'through a jointed shaft on to the rear axle h«* th* jointed ahaft has _wo bevel pinions running free on the end of it of different sue. **d these are alwaya in me.h with _ large bevel pioion fixed to .he back way, and a smaller one inside the largo one in tho space usually occupied ty the differential. Between these two bevel pi_ions on .the jointed shaft there « a P clutch operated by a lever on the steering wheel, which Jocks either at will, and *>«««» the high or low speed. When this clutch is in a centra portion both these puuoaa revolve idly, and the power of the engine is not communicated to the **°vff" pn!tial "But what about the differential, our readers may _sk? The» » no A, • eiAstitute both the road wheels are fitted with free-wheel clutchea of the ratche -type, such as are in use on bicycles, but of course much larger. One wheel can conse aueatly overrun the other at corners. ~ _ . „_._u "To make the system quite pHtfin, we will sum up the results. The engine or cran* shfctt runs io an ordinary frioUon clutch, with a reduction gear between, this ciutcn is used in the ordinary way <for starting or for disconnecting the engine eudden.y when s-top-pin<* or in traffic. From the crank shaft a jointed shaft, commonly known as an arbor Bbaft, convey* the power through bevel pin-iens _. the large or small bevel pimons on tne rear axle of the car, according as the hi-h or low gear is required, a positive clutch between the pinions effecting tho change. If it 'U desired to disconnect the gear altogether, as when the oar is left standing with the engine running, this positive clutch is put in a central position between tho two pinions on the arbor shaft. Finally the ifree-wheel olutenea on *ho rear road wheels cnaWe tho car 'to run absolutely free downhill, just as a freewheel bicycle runs free. In-other words, the moment ■tho speed of the car crceetls tliat of the gear rthe engine runs free. It is impossible, therefore, under any circumstances for the car to drive the engine. The other features consist of double band hraJce on hind wheels and emergency tyre brakes. The pump is worked by v chain, the engine ia over the front springs, and.here are in addition coil springs between the froat portion of the body and the frame. Everything is most get-at-able. There ere three small levers on the ateering wheel. One works ithe positive clutch for changing the gears, the second regulates the mixture, and tho tkiTd times the ignition. "Tho Swift Cycle Co. have for years been noted for the superlative excellence of their workmanship, and 'in workmanship and material rthe car in question is a crediV to them. "It is peculiarly suited for rough roads, for it ia immensely strong, aad at the same time of moderate weight.
