ELECTRICAL POWER SCHEMES.
MR ALLO TO VISIT THE RAKAIA. Air Edmund Alio and Mr A. Dudley Dobson, City Engineer, left for Glentunnel by yesterday afternoon's train to visit the Rakaiu river at tha gorge. Mr Alio will report on the suitability of the river at this point for developing electrical energy. The gorge is about fourteen or fifteen miles from Glentunnel, and is in many respects similar to the Waimakariri gorge at the place where the proposed electrical power is proposed! to be obtained. By rail and road the Rakaia Gorge is about 55 miles from this city, but in a straight line the distance is much less. Just above the gorge bridge the, river is cor-tined in a narrow gorge, the banks of which aie from 500 to 600 feet high. Messrs Alio and Dobson went as far as Coalgate yesterday, and will return by this evenine's"train. ' Mr Alio intends leaving for Wellington by Thursday evening's steamer. Mr John McLachlan, M.H.R., has received a telegram from tlie Minister for Public Works, in reply to an enquiry as to when Mr Alio might be expected to report on Ashburton rivers, as follows: — -Cannot give definitely -Mr Allo's movements, but I understand that he has to return almost immediately to Sydney. Government are making arrangements for report from expert upon more important rivers, where water power is available. When appointment made you will be notified in due course.—Win.'Hall-Jones."
