CONTRIBUTIONS,
DISCUSSION IN PARLIAMENT.
United Piesi Association— By Electric Telegraph— Copyright. {Received March 4th, 11.33 p.m.) LONDON, March 4. Iα the House of Commons during the discussion on the supplementary vote for the Colonial Department, Mr Austen Chamberlain, replying to Mr £. Robertson's and Mr T. G. Bowles's allegations of negative results from the PrAntera* Conference in London, said that any increased contribution by the colonies to Imperial defence must be free and spontaneous. The resolution adopted "by the Conferenoe in regard to preferential trade within the Empire was receiving the Imperial Government's most careful attention.
The " Standard " declares the self-govern-ing colonies cannot be expected to merge their own preparations in a general scheme of defence until convinced that the Imperial Army and Navy are being administered on & thoroughly scfentifio and comprehennive plan.
