THE RUSSIAN REPRESENTATIVE.
LOCAL INSTITUTION'S VISITED. M. Nicolas Krukoff, representative of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, spent the whole of Monday at the- School of Agriculture, Lincoln." He is of opinion that the land is kept in the best ot order, and that Mr Lowrie is the right man in the right place. M. Krukoff had heaid of Mr Lowlie's lanij in South Australia, where the Agricultural School had (fooLshly in M. KiukotTs opinion) established in desert j land in order to show what results might be produced fiom absolute barrenness. Twelve years of work under such circumstances meant the expenditure of much time, but for avl that the knowledge gained was precious. During a drive ai-ound the Lincoln district M. Krukoff noticed much good soil, white some, he thought, was very inferior. Yesterday M. Krukoff, as the guest of Messrs Dalgety and Co., visited the Belfast Freezing Works, and was much impressed by what he saw there. He considered that the whole establishment was carried out ou very first-class lines, and was better kept aud cleaner than anything he had seen m Victoria. From thence tlie visitor was takeu to the Central Co-operative Dairy Company's Factory at Addington, which also, in his opinion, beat anything lie had seen in Australia. Here M. Krukoff parenthetically remarked that tin Australian experts in this business, though they probably thought a great deal, were remarkably silent upon any matters connected with their business. . All the same, the Factory was not up to the best in Denmark, although everything was clean, and no preparation of any kind had been made for the visit of inspection. M. Krukoff had seen representative samples of our grains, grasses, and seeds, and thought he had pretty well sized up the capacities of the Canterbury Plains. He considered there were few better spots on the globe of equal area which could boast : of such rich soil conjoined with the most favourable climatic conditions. "I really mean this," said M. Krukoff. To-day M; Krukoff will visit the Agricul- ' tural Implement Works of Messrs P. and D. '■ Duncan, and will leave for Dunedin by the < express.
