LAND BOARD.
A special meeting of the Canterbury Land Board was held on Thursday. Present —Messrs Thos. Humphries (Commissioneri, A. C. Pringle, and J. Scaly. Several applications for land were considered, and -applications for transfers of leases and licenses were dealt with.. It was resolved that on certain holdings in the Waikakahi Settlement (Block IV., Waitaki S.D.) all land which has been cropped three or four times consecutively must be laid down in grass, without grain crop, before March 31st next, and that such area .must under no circumstances be less than, one-half of the total area of the section, provided thai. if in the opinion of the Land Board the season should prove unsuitable for carrying this out; then the time may be extended until October Ist. No third or fourth consecutive grain crops will be allowed during the coming season without tl*e permission of the Land Board first obtained, and any breaches of the conditions will be followed by forfeiture of lands. The Kowai Road Board was authorised to impound stook from Crown lands for a quarter-mile on each side of the bridge at Leithfiedd. The matter of granting extended control to the Kowai Road Board over the north side of the Ashley riverbed, between the railway and the sea, was deferred pending irapection and inquiry by the Comnris- i sicmer. It was resolved to recommend that the application of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College to have Reserve No 205, consisting of 640 acres, at Craigieburn (-which had been eet apart as an endowment for a classical school), handed over to it, be granted. It was resolved to modify the resolution of the Board of December 4th, and to fin the term of lease of the Crown land and forest reserves at Mount Torksse at three years, instead of fourteen years. The application of the Agricultural Department to have Block Xni., Darfield township, reserved for it* uee, was approved, and it was resolved to appropriate lots 1 and 2 m municipal reserves instead of lots 13 and 21. With regard to the numerous applications for relief on account of the flood damage sustained in South Canterbury, in March, 1902, it was resolved alter mature consideration that the Board cannot see its way to make any recommendation for remission of rent. Several defaulters were dealt with, and after transacting other buaii ness the Board adjourned.
