A large ; gathering of leading citizens, the commercial, financial, shipping, end political actions of the community, was entertained at luncheon aboard tho Mooraki by the Union Company, to ■ celebrate the vessel's entry into the intercolonial trade. Mr JackM»n. manager in Sydney of the U.S.S. Company, presided. Sir John See, Mr G. H. Keid. Mr Carruthers, and Mr Wbe were present. Sir John See, in a highly eulogistic speech, proposed t:io toast of the Union Company. He testified to its worjderful enterprise, which had been kept up to liigh-water mark. In the Union Company uiey had an example of the best service outride the United Kingdom. They had eet an example to.otSier companies. The Union Hag meant, "We lead, others fol]ow." He hoped the powers that be would relax some of the restrictions imposed on the shipping trado. With reference to the shipping combine, Be said it was a menace to our future, unless the Government took Home step to control it. Hβ made mention of Mr Seddon's generous offer to New South Wales, and explained that he iiad pointed out that this State was not in an impecunious condition, despite the drought, and now that abundant rain had fallen they ■would £>oon forget all their troubles. The President of the Chamber of Commerce supported the Premier's wish for the Jeuoeeas of the Company. Mr Jackson responded. The captain And officers were also toasted.
