Although Lord Roberts agreed, Mr Brodriok reftmed Sir Hugh McCalmont, an officer on full pay, permissidh to stand for the Newmarket seat, rendered vacant by the death of the late Mr Harry McOalmoat. Mr Henry Leonard Brassey, a Conservative, and Mr Rose, a Liberal, are candidates for the seat. THE SUOAR CONVENTION. The Right Hon. A. J. Balfour, in the House of Commons, said there was no reason for delaying the ratification of the Sugar Convention, as it did not require Britain to penalise the sugar of any self-governing colonies.
