THE "MESSIAH."
Every new fact concerniiiig Hha composition of so universally known an oratorio as the "Messiah" is of the greatest interest, the more so as its history is comparatively obscure. As a case in point, the discovery has just been made that the Hallelujah Chorus was composfd by Handel on a Sunday I This fresh information, and njuch more in regard to the genesis of Handel's masterpiece, together with an account of its first performance and publication, forme the subject of an article m the November issue of the "Musical Times." Aβ furnishing an important side-light on the great oratorio, our contemporary also gives a biography and portrait of Mr Ohariee Jeonene, the compiler of the word-book of the "Messiah," concerning whom very little has hitherto been anade known. The richest commoner in England of hw day, ihe was named "Solyman the Magnificent," and he became one of ■Handel's beat friends.
