ARRIVAL OF THE VICTORIA.
Messrs Huddart-Parker nnd Co.'c new steamship Victom, which arrived yesterday morning, bears a striking reetmblanpo to the Zcalandia, but she is 160 tone measurement larger. Generally, the Victoria's dimensions arc—33sft bjr 43it beam, end 33ft lOin depth of ho.d. Her tonnage is 2969 gross, and 1869 tons net, and her measurement is 5780 tons. Accommodation is provided for 162 first-class and 102 second-clues passengers, several deck cabins being noticeable. Internally the vessel may best be described as palatial fittings and upholstery being equal to those found on the latest type of ocean greyhound. The .upper deck cabins, which contain two beds each, arc unusually spacious and freely ventilated. Her second saloon is considered to be quite on a par with the second on board the big mail boats of Australia. In view of Into events on the New Zealand coast, the vessel's life-saving apparatus is noteworthy. This corsists of cix lifeboats, and two smaller boats, the former being capable, of carrying each 50 persons, and constructed to latest designs for safety; each is fitted to patent chocks. Tho Victoria was built by Messrs Gourlay Brothers, of Dundee, and is fitted with triple expansion engines of 3500 horsepower., The Victoria left Melbourne at 11.30 p.m. on December 9th, and Hobart at 8 p.m. on the 11th. After leaving Hobart fine weather and smooth seas were experienced till noon on the 12th. Afterwards fresh easterly winds Rnd heavy banks of fogs at frequent intervals were encountered, necessitating the reduction of the engines to half speed for five hours and a half in all. The Bluff woe reached at 3 p.m. on the 14th. Captain Waller, late of tho Weatralia, is in command, ■with Mr Solly chief officer (Westralia), Mr Ryall second. Mr Bates third. Mr Bennett chief engineer, Mr W. T. Applcton purser (Westralia), and Mr Miller chief ,steward (Westralia).
