Lieutenant Kirkham, of the .City' Rifles', sustained injuries in the St. Clair baths to-day, which'it-is feared;will prove.fatal.No. 1 battalion is in camp on Forbury Hill, and Lieutenant Kirkham and other officers ttent for a -swim in tho baths. He took a dive, and as he did not,rise the others dragged him ashore, when it was found he had sustained serious injury to his skull, either by striking the bottom Of a ledge of rock:' He was removed to the hospital, where he lies unconscious, and there ia little hope of ha* recovery. He is the eon of an Anglican clergyman, who was some years ago stationed at Roalyn, but is not known to hove any rehv tiver in the colonies now. WANGANTJI, December 13. An old man bad a narrow escape from being burned to death yesterday while m a state of intoxication. He went to sleep under some trees in Queen* Avenue, where the grass caught fire from the ashes of his pipe. ' When awakened? by the flame* his clothes were on fire, and he made for a wire fence close to, but fell into U d*tch in which a quantity of dry leave* had accumukbed, and these began burning fiercely. Scrambling out he attempted to get through the wire*, but ; could not,, and would have been burned to death had not a resident observed his struggles and gone to the rescue. He was taken to the hospital. .
