Lieutenant Kirkham, of the .City' Rifles', sustained injuries in the St. Clair baths to-day, which'it-is feared;will prove.fatal.No. 1 battalion is in camp on Forbury Hill, and Lieutenant Kirkham and other officers ttent for a -swim in tho baths. An old man bad a narrow escape from being burned to death yesterday while m a state of intoxication. He went to sleep under some trees in Queen* Avenue, where the grass caught fire from the ashes of his pipe. ' When awakened? by the flame* his clothes were on fire, and he made for a wire fence close to, but fell into U d*tch in which a quantity of dry leave* had accumukbed, and these began burning fiercely. Scrambling out he attempted to get through the wire*, but ; could not,, and would have been burned to death had not a resident observed his struggles and gone to the rescue. He was taken to the hospital. .
