TRAINS IN COLLISION AT MATAURA.
(SPECIAL TO "TH* PBXS3.") i GORE, December 14. A railway accident, -involving 'consider* able" damage to rolling stock, occurred at Mataura about six o'clock last night. ' A goods train from Clinton to * InvercargUl was standing in the aiding 'waiting th* arrival of iLe evening mixed goods and pa** senger train "from Inyercargill to Clinton. The semaphore signal was lowered to let th» latter train into {he station, aiaof it approached at a rate o* six miles WbpurT The pointe, were set wrong, and the trairi;rah info the aiding upon which the goods train' was standing. • Thedriver of the moving train; <Wm. McMuliin) seeing a collision was 7 imminent applied his brakes, and fever*edlhe engine. He the* jumped ofif, and ran towards the engine of the good* train.' 'When the ': collision occurred the moving engine and aeverai trucks left the rails, a meat van falling over on its side.on top of McMuliin, He war extricated shortly afterwards, and was ' found to have sustained only a few bruiser and cut* about the head. Several of the trucks were telescoped. ■ A well-known district racehorse, was, goi out of the ■> wreck of a horsebox unbanned, none of th* ' passengers were, injured, owing to there being * long string of trucks between the carriage* and the engine-. . The goods engine was not so much damaged as the others, and did not leave the rail*. The work of clearing the line occupied most of last night, and a good part of to-day.
