At 5 p.m. yesterday the Returning Officer notified the result of the local option polling to have been as stated above. The total number of votes recorded was 3973. At present no license is lost by 45 votce, and reduction carried by 151. In June next the Licensing Committee can Reduce not less than 6 per cent., nor more than 25 per cent. ■ a{ the hotel licenses. In n district with ton hotels the reduction is to be not lees than one, «nd in a district with between ten and thirty hotels, two licenses must be cancelled. As Kniapoi district has eleven hotels, two will have to lose their licenses, probably one each in Kaiapoi and Rangiora. Eleven houses will .', be affected, six in the borough nnd live in the outfying districts. One of those in the borough, toe a Somerset, has been in course of re-bunding at a cost of over £12,000, - and would have been the most handsome ' Intel between Christchurch and Oamaru. - An a result of the poll all the work on the '.' notel has been stopped for the present, and , tbe men have been temporarily discharged. . The nearest licensed house in the district , wiK be the Chertsey Hotel, which is just 4b the corner of the road which bounds the Ashbarton and Selwyn. electoral districts. There will, of course! be left for a time at least the Ashburton rnilwnv refreshment rooms and the Ashburton Club, nnd specula- . tion ie now rife «s to the ultimate effect the carrying of prohibition will have on these places. There Was great excitement in Asnbuxton on Tuesday evening when it became known that prohibition 'had be?n carried," even the interest in the electoral poll sinking into comparative insignificance ' alongside the no license issue. It w understood that steps are beins taken in Ashburton to upset the no license vote, if possible, on the crounds that the law has been violated in the preparation of the rolls. AVON. Our Dunedin correspondent telegraphs: —"The results of the no license vote throughout Otago and Southland has created quite a sir in tho ranks of the trade, which has suffered the Everest blow ever yet experienced, it is hard to say what the consequences will be; to some, of course, it means next to ruin. In one district , alone where .prohibition has been carried a well-known hotelkeeper only recent•ly hiuilt a new house at a cost of £1500, and another a few weeks ago renewed his lease for seven years. These are only a few instances of the number who will personally suffer from the effects of prohibition and reduction. Of course, on ths other hand, the temperance party are jubilant, and claim a decided victory. For months pasi Otago and Southland have
been regarded as the strongholds of the prohibition party, and that being m> the results of the polls in most of the districts occasioned little or no surprise." Prohibition will come into effect in Newtown (telegraphs our Wellington correspondent; in July rest, ac the existing licenses expire on the 30th June. Five hotels are. affected hr the poll, and they are the following : —-Grosvenor Hotel( which is owned by Mr T. G. Macarthy), Newtmin Hote' (owned by Mr Arkell, of Auckland). Park Hotel (leased by Messrs Staples and Co.), Kiibirnie Hotel (owned by the Compton Eitate). and the Island Bay Hotel (owned by 'Mr H. Gilmer!. Two of these hotels— viz.. those at Kiibirnie and Island Bay, are summer resorts, and depend mainly on ■holiday and Sunday trade. The former is owned by the Misses Compton, who derive their income from it. The Park Hotel belongs to Mr Gleeson. Messrs Staple.* and Co. £ad a long lease of it, but of course, \v..h tbe> carrying of prohibition, the lease will be cancelled, and the owner and not the brewing firm will suffer tlie main loss.
