CASHMERE HILLS DOMAIN BOARD.
PLANTING OAKS IN VICTORIA PARK. It will be remembered that a deputation waited on the Selwyn County Council some little time ago with a request that assistance sboufkl be given to plant a. grove of oaks in Victoria Park. Tbf matter came before a meeting of the Cashmere Hills Domain Board yesterday, when there were present Messrs Brown (Chairman). Dunlop, C. D. Morris, the Mayors of Christchurch and Sydenham. A. letter was read from the Mayor of Christ-church, stating that he had visited the Park a few days before, in company with Sir John Hafl, and was of opinion that the work was one which should be carried out. He enclosed a letter which he had received from Sir John Hall. This stated that Sir John had seen Mr Rolleston, who had suggested that a tablet should be erected in the Park, bearing some such inscription as the following:—"lbis Park was opened in commemoration of the Jubilee of Iter Majesty Queen Victoria." Sir John Hall went on to cay that he felt the inscription suggested by Mr Rolleston should be added to by putting the words, "Opened by Hon. Wm. Rolleston." Canterbury was indebted for many advantages including the Victoria Park," to Mr Rolleston's thoughtful foresight, and ' he felt sure the Board would give his wish with regard to the tablet every consideration If funds were required for "this small work he would undertake that they should be forthcoming. He wcu-ld also be very pleased to send the Board 1000 well grown two-year-old insignia trees. On the motion of Mr Morris, it was decided to erect the tablet as suggested by Mr Rolleston, and Sir John Hall and the
Chairman and Mr Morris were appointed a« a Sub-Committee to carry oat the ta_~The Mayor of _hristo_urc_ suggested that some of the funds subscribed should ba used to preserve the plantations already made. Air Morris moved —"That arrangements he made for the clearing of the plantations already established." The Mayor of Christchurch seconded the motion, which was agreed to. After some discussion it "was resolved— "That Messrs Cockayne and T. W. Adams bs asked to supervise the planting of the osks in Victoria Park, and that the present ims of fencing be utilised as much as possible." On the motion of the Mayor of Sydenham, it w? decided—-'"That, a stun not exceeding £100 be expended in planting the tree 3in Victoria Park." •Mr Morris moved —"That the Cliristchnrch City Council, the Sydenham Borough Council, and the Executive of the Coronation Celebration, be written to asking for contributions towards the cost of the work." The Mayor of Sydenham seconded the motion, which was agreed to. It was arranged that the Board should pay a visit to Victoria Park on a day to be fixed.
