Owing to the drought and the scarcity of cattle, the Baynes Meat Works, at Queensport, have closed, rendering 290 men idle. Three hundred and fifty men have been dismissed from the Pinkenfoa works. The State Assembly finances for the year are burdened to the eitent of nearly £20,000, by pensions to men disabled, and the widows of those killed, in the wax. THE TROTTER-CAMiaaO_7 INCIDENT. Sir E. Barton has cabled to Mr Deakin, the Federal Treasurer, that Colonel Cameron, commanding the Coronation Commonwealth Contingent, has been exoneratein connection with his recent conflict with General Trotter. [According to a cable message received on July sth, a disagreement arose at the Prince of Wales's xveview of the Colonial troops in London, between LieutenantColonel Cameron, a member for Tasmania in the Federal Senate, who was in command of the Australian Contingent, and MajorGeneral Trotter, commaading the Home district. Lieutenant-Colonel Cameron resented the latter's personally ordering the Australians to move.l (Recer—id August 7th, 10.15 p.m.) THE PEARLING INDUSTRY. MELBOURNE, August 7. It is understood that the report of Judge Dashwood, who was appointed to enquire into the pearling industry in Northern Anstralia, states that it cannot be carried on without black labour, and if the Immigration Restriction Act is strictly enforced, tie industry will bs practicaSy killed, or it will drift into tbe hands of aliens outside Australia.
