Messrs T. Gapes and J. M. Douglass, Justices of the Peace, presided at the Police Court yesterday. INEBRIETY. Anthony Fernandez was tined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonmoni, for inebriety. CHEATING A MARINEOn the 24th, July Alfred J. Hawkins. a marine of the Itingarooma. haul occasion to driver a message in Cliristchurch, under circin—stances which called for haste. He hailed a cabman, Boyd Thomson by name, and on being driven to tlie place, thrust a sovereign into his hand, and said that he would discharge his business and be back in a moment for the change- He came back in a moment, but the cabman had departed. Yesterday Boyd. Thomson was charged with theft of tlie sovereign, and after bearing the case against him he admitted his guilt, and pleaded for lenient treatment on the ground that he had a wife and six children to support. Chief t)etective Chrystal, who conducted the case for the polic?, said that the man was not maintaining his family, but had disobeyed an order of the Court that he should "do so. There was nothing e_e known against him. Tho Bench sentenced accused to seven days' imprison ment. ALLEGED CANARY STEALING. Two lads, seventeen and fourteen yeai -a, were charged wkh stealing two canaries on July 30th at St. Albans, valued at 10s, and the property of William Anderson. The elder boy pleaded "Not guilty,*' and the yonnger confessed to the theft of one bird.
