-♦ Messrs G. I. Dunn, Barsball, H. F. Niooll, A. A. Jenkins, J. Dynes, G. S. Mathias, E. J. Connal, A. E. Lawrence, Q- R. Cheeseman, D. A. James, J. C. McCarthy, and A. K. S. Mackenzie, went South by the express yesterday morning. Messrs L. Price, J. Mill, B. Fuller, J. Matheson and 8. V. Montgomery, arrived from the South by last night's express. Mr J. E. Henrys was a passenger from Wellington yesterday. Mr L. Blundell arrived in town yesterday m-orninsr. Mx W. Berry, second Assistant of the Riddiford street School, Wellington, has been presented with souvenirs by _the puipils and etaff on leaving to take up an appointment under the North Canterbury Education Board. Sergeant Price Ballamtyne has cabled to his friends that he and his brother, LanceCorporal S. A. Ballantyne, of the Ninth, have obtained tiheir d-scnarge, and will remain in South Africa. A letter was received from Mr E. (J. Wright at the Harbour Board meeting, stating that he should regret very much having to resign his seat on the Board, but if his illness continued hb would have to do so. The Board decided that the secretary should write a letter to Mr Wright expressing regret at bis illness, and hoping that he would soon be able to be amongst them againA social was held in the Eyreton Schoolroom last week, to bid farewell to Misa C. L. Pattrick, of New Brighton, prior to lier taking up the position of assistantmistress at the Normal School. On behalf of the head-teacher and scholars, ivliss Pattrick was presented with a handsome dressing-case, and an appreciative address, and on beJialf of the School Committee with a cape of silver table ware. On Wednesday, in the Cyttelton Borough Council Chamber, Mr John Roes, who lately retired from the Borough school, was met by a number of his old pupils, the Mayer, Mr J. Grubb, himself one of the oldest pupils, being in the chair. Amongst those present were the Rev. W. J. (jow, Messrs J. Brown and T. C. Field (exMayors of Lyttelton), Messrs J. Malcolmson" (Ashburton), C. Aschman, J. and A. Piteaithly, Cr. Cleary. Mr G. A. Lewin (Town Clerk), Mr E. N. Just (headmaster of the Borough school). The Chairman presented Mr Ross with a purse of sovereigns, the gift of old pupils, and prefaced the presentation with highly eulogistic remarks on the character of the recipient as a teacher and a man. Mr G. A. Lewin, who had acted as secretary, read apologies from absent pupils hailing from many parts of New Zealand and Australia. Mr Ros?, who was heartily applauded, acknowledged with evident feeling the kind remarks and jrenerous present of his former pupils. "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," and votes of thanks to the Chairman and Secretary, closed the proceedings. Miss Bowden, of Addington, has been, recommended for appointment as assistant* mistress of the Ladbrooks school.
