PLANTING OAKS IN VICTORIA PARK.
DEPUTATION TO THE COUNTY COUNCIL.
It having been proposed to pliant a prove of oaks in Victoria Park, on the Port Hills, a deputation wtidted on the Selwyn County Council yesterday to ask the Council to vote something out of their Plantation Fund ii> aid of the workThe deputation comprised Sir Jc&n Hall, Messrs T. W. Adams, Cockayne, Carrick, and John Anderson. Sir Jrfhn Hall said that, in conneetijon with the Coronation, it was felt that it would be a good thing if a grove of oaks were planted in Victoria Park. The Cashmere Hills Domain Board, which had the jurisdiction over the Park, had no funds, and tne deputation now asked the Council if tihey could see their way clear to give a subsidy. Mr Adams sa.id that oaks would grow splendidly up there, and Mr Carrick said that Mr Cockayne and himself, representing the Beautifying Societ" felt the*, though Victoria Park wag somewfha*. far out of the city, if the work could be carried out, their Society would help as far as possible out of their" funds. Sir John Hall said that he had received a letter from ifche Mayor, expressing a hoDe tohalt the deputation would be successful. Mr R. Westenra had also written, expressing his sympathy wdth the work. Mr Jotin Anderson urged that the native trees should be perpetuated in Victoria Park. Mr Adams said he would be very clad, indeed, to give one hundred totara trees for the work. Sir John Hall said he would give all the pnnus ins!gnis reouired for shelter, and Mr Cockayne announced that he would be glad to give several native •trees, which would grow splendidly up there, especially in t3ie gullies. Mr Eennie said that tfhey were, he was afraid, restricted to planning their own reserves, but Ihe was quite in sympa/Jhy with the deputation, if it could be arranged. (Mr Garrick paid that the Beautifying Association had always (been looked upon as for Obiistchurch. When, however, tiiey, as a smail Association, were prepared to assist this work, the Council might stretch a point. The Chairman said he felt sure ihe Council would do all in its power to assist the deputation. They would consider the question and left tihe deputation know
The deputation thanked the Council and ■withdrew.
It was resolved that the Clerk look u.p the maibter, and if tlhe Council could do so, that the grant be made out of the Plantation Fund-
