LANDLORDS FIGHTING THE LEAGUE. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received July 23rd, 9 a.m.) LONDON, July 22. The Irish landlords have combined, subscribing £100,000 capital, with the object of opposing the designs of the United Irish League. Mr Phelan, ex-Mayor of San Francisco, has sent Mr John Redmond, M.P., £500, towards the Nationalist Defence Fund, in connection with the recent issue of writs at the instance of Lord De Freyne. on charges of conspiring to compel the sale of property below its value.
A cable from London on June 14th stated:—"At the instance of Lord De Freyr.e, vrith a view of enforcing the law laid down by the House of Lords in the case of Quinn versus Latham, the Court of Chancery at Dublin has issued writs against thirty persons, including several Nationalist members of the House of Commons. Mr j Michael Davitt, and other members of the I United Irish League, and the proprietors of "Freeman's Journal." on a charge of conspiracy to compel the sale of property below its value, in the course of the no-rent agitation on Lord De Freyne'3 Connaught estates. Damages are claimed. The trials will be the most important for years."
