MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
HRTTNKENNESS. Two male first offenders were each fined 5s and cost* by Mr R. Beetham, S.M. Petei Thompson, who was found drunk in Mancheter street, was also fined 6s. PETTY THEFT. Edward Norton Taylor pleaded "Guilty" to a charge of stealing a handbag valued at 10s 6d at Wellington, and also to a ohargo of obtaining £1 by means of a valueless cheque. Mr Maude, who appeared for the accused, applied for a days remand in order to procure evidence as to the man's good character when sober. The Magistrate granted the application. ALLEGED ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. William Thomas Warren was chargpd vvith attempting to commit suicide on June 30th by drawing an open razor aoross his breast. A certificate was produced from the fjaol surgeon that the man was still unable to appear, and the accused was accordingly remanded for a week. AN ASS-WLT CASE. A man named William Gatfleld was visiting the Royal George Hotel on Ju!r 19th. when his wife came after him with a whip, d«.larin_? her intention of giving her husband a thrashing. Two or three of those who were in the hot-el at t'r.e time went out to witness the proceeding, j but Gatfleld, resenting this unwarrantable intrusion, struck one of the men, Josepn Anderson, in the face wcth his clenched fist. The Magistrate considered that Gntfisld'H action tended to disturb th& public peace, and he accordingly fined him 10s and costs. Mr Leathern appeared for the defendant. FALSE REPRESENTATIONS. A young man, named Daniel Mclntyre, appeared upon a charge of obtaining three we&ks' board and lodsaw: valued at £2 from Mrs Emily Cater, by falsely representing that be was Detective F&bey's nephew. He was also charged with stealing a Is towel from Margaret Larsons, and also breakin r into the house of John Hacketfc and stealing articles to th* -c'-ue of 6s. The accused, who pleaded "Guilty" to the UitPi charges, explained that the towel was taken by mistake, and that the other articles were his own propert His statement that he was the detective's nephew had been simply a joke. Sub-Inspector Black stated that there were no previous convictions asrainst the accused. The Magistrate cr.iivicted tbe man, and discharged him on raneHtion that he left the city in twentvfotir hours. A FENCING CASE. Ann Snelling (Mr Graham) applied for an order under the Fencing Act Sa.rr.Ji Bell (Mr Russell). The complainant was ordered to pay 6s 3d, part of the cost <><• the fence, and each party was directed to pay her own costs. MAINTENANCE. Thomas Francis Chssnall (Mr Kitraenberger) was ordered to pay 13s 6d per wesk towards the support of bis wife. Mr Donnelly appeared for the complainant, Thomas Henry Carmichael was ordered to pay 4s a week towards the support of his son at i Burnham
