JAPAN AND AUSTRALIA.
BRITAIN'S NEW ALLY DISSATISFIED. IMMIGRATION RESTRICTIONS AND RETALIATION. United Press Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright. • (Received July 22nd, 10.28 a.m.) MELBOURNE, July 22. A representative of the Melbourne "Age," just returned from a visit to Japan, states that itfc..- prospects of extending the export trade between Australia and Japan is by no means promising. The Japanese are thoroughly determined to protect themselves, and as far as possible produce everything they want. Sir Malcolm McEacharn, who has also returned from a visit to Japan, speaks similarly. In reference to trade, he says the Japanese Ministry is greatly dissatisfied with the Federal Immigration Restriction Bill, and considers it to be directly aimed at Japan, and a direct insult to a friendly people. It will probably result in the withdrawal of the subsidy to the Japanese line of steamers trading to Australia.
