His Excellency the Governor, Lord Ranfurly, arrived at Lyttelton yesterday morning by the Riugarooma, and reached Christchurch shortly after one o'clock. He was met by the Mayor -(Mr H. F. Wigram). During his stay here Lord Ranfurly, who is accompanied by the Hon. H. C. Butler AJD.C, will be the guest of Mr and Mrs

Wigram. This afternoon his Excellency will attend the meeting of the conxmittee a* the Council Chambers, in connection with the proposed Veterans' Home. Lieutenant-Colonel Day, Mr J. Cox, and Mr Ben Fuller went south by the express yesterday morning. Mr G. Magnus, Mr Bbanden, Mr J. R. Davison, Mr Wheeler, 3_r Middleton. Mr A- Begg, Mr Matthews, Mr Reed, Mr J. J. Kelly (Sydney), _dr F. B. Gibbons, Mr Rothschild, and Mr Temple arrived in town yesterday. Mr D. D- Hyde, Government poultry expert, was a passenger by the express from the south yesterday. _ Sergeant Remer, of Clinton, has *been transferred to Christohurch. Messrs J. Davison (St- Leonards), R. A. Chaffey (Highfield), and A. (Bethel (Pahau) arrived in Christohurch last night. Yesterday the dealers and butchers doing business in the Central Yards, Rangiora, made a presentation of a silver inkstand to Mr J. G. Macdonald, auctioneer for the 'North Canterbury Co-op., Ltd., on the eve of his marriage. Mr A. ft- Clarkson made the presentation. Mr and Mrs John Sandford, of Bromley, who came to New Zealand in 1857, and have lived in the district ever since, celebrated their golden wedding yesterday, in the presence of a large gathering of their friends. Although aged seventy-five and seventy-three respectively, 'Mr and Mrs Sandford are stUl strong and well, and they received' many hearty congratulations yesterday. Mr Sandford, in his younger days, won the first prize ever shot for at a local volunteer encampment in 1857.
