THE AUSTRALIANS IN ENGLAND.

The match against Derbyshire was commenced at Derby in bright weather, but the attendance was small. The wicket was good. Noble, KeHy, and Jones were omitted from the Australian team. Derbyshire batted first, and the first wicket fell with the score at 5. OUiviere, with. Storer, raised the score to 20, when the former gave Carter a chance. 20 —2—15. Asheroft batted carefully, and was forty minutes at the wickets fox 14, when Armstrong bowled him. Storer scored steadily, but Saunders was proving expensive. 64—3—-14. Storer added 3 to hie score, and then fell a victim to Armstrong. 67—4—36. Chatterton and Lawton were then partnered, and the latter played lively cricket, but was missed with 25 to his credit at long-on by Howeli After lunch Howel had his revenge, Lawton playing him on. 134—5—50. Humphries was caught by Hill before any addition had been made to the total. 134—6—0. Chatterton, with care, compiled 14, when Howeli dismissed him with the score unaltered. The same bowler got Forester immediately after. .140—8—2. Hulme lifted one to Gregory, which he held. 152—9—12. Gregory caught Bestwick without any further score, and the Derbyshire innings closed for 152. Trumper and Hopkins opened for the Australians. The former was caught by Humphries, after making 10- 17—1—10. Hill partnered Hopkins, but did not , stay. He made a single, and then Bestwick clean bowled him. JJCHM- Darling came to Hopkine's assistance, and play became fast. During <a long and fruitful batsmen gave an excellent display of their Darling eventually being' bowted by Offiviere. He showed brilliant driving and cutting, and the partoership added 113 runs to the score. 133—3—65. Hopkins Shad 55 to ihis credit when Gregory joined him. The newcomer's life, though short, was eventful. After scoring a single, and being let off from a sharp chance in the slips, he was caught at the wickete. 142—4—1". Hopkins and Armstrong played out time, the score being four wickets for 156—Hopkins 68, Armstrong 9. Hopkins played a fine dashing game, marred by two chances.
