LYTTELTON.

When it was rumoured in Lyttelton on Saturday night that peace had been declared, a doubt was felt pretty generally that the news was too good to be true. A few cheers were given, the whistle of the railway engine sounded, and some-detonat-ing bombs were exploded. But the rejoicing was only half hearted, as a telegraphic message was sent to town and a reply came that the terms of peace bad not been finally arranged. In consequence of the rumour, however, many enquiries were made yesterday from the clergymen in Port, as had it been confirmed no doubt the "Te Deum" wou'.d have been sung, and allusion 'to the termination of the war would have been made from the various pulpits. Arrangements are bektg made -by the Mayor, Mr J. Grubb, Mr G. Laurenson, M.H.R. for the district, for the holding of a united service of thanksgiving in Lyttelton as «oon as possible after the receipt of news of peace having been declared. The representatives of ~ie various religious bodies in t_e Roman Catholic. Methodist; and Salvation Army—have been invited to participate- In all probability the service will be tteld in the Drill Shed, and it is intended to endeavour to obtain the attendance, of volunteers in their uniforms, and membaia of societies i»,-t___r regalia. [ The Lyttelton Borough found! meet tonight and possibly may make arrangement* for a united denwnstmtion.
