The Mayor, Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, teEegnaphed the Premier, asking that the South Island portion of the Tenth Contingent bo despatched from Christehurcih, and haa received a .reply that tihe matter will be considered by the Cabinet.

AUCKLAND, March 22.

The "Star's" New Plymouth correspendent telegraphs that the Premier emphaticaiUy denies the accuracy of the following statement in the report of his interview with the Auokland Ministers' Association: —"The Premier said he had to acknowledge the Government erred in not sending t__pla-'ns sooner. Chaplains would •go with a_ future Contingent." What the Premier did say was, that Contingents prior to t_e Eighth, not 'being complete columns chaplains were not aUowed, under the military regulations. As soon as the opportunity offered of sending chaplains, it was embraced by sending one wit— the Eighth, -and, in compliance to a request to 'Lord Kitchener, lie, as a special favour, -was allowing two chaplains to go with *_ne Ninth.

About 420 applications 'have been received for enrolment in the Contingent. Mr Seddon has telecntphed tha-t the port of departure of the South Wand battalion will be decided after he consults with the Commandant.

Troopers C. E. and W. Gray, who recently returned from South Africa, were entertained In the Green street schoolroom, Ashburton Forks, on Friday evening, and eaph presented' with a gold medal suitably inscribed: In responding to the toast of " Our Boys at the Front, and those f on the Way,?' at the complimentary banquet given at Ashburton to Mr Hugo Friedlander, Mr Joshua Tucker said that his son, Captain Fred. Tucker, of the Sixth Contingent, was now at Capetown, and he believed he was on his way home.
