ASHBURTON COUNTY COUNCIL
The Ashlburton County Council met yesterday. Present—All the-members, Mr C. J. Harper in the chair.' ' In connection with -(mc Ruapuna headworks the Chairman said, that the £1000 grant was given a good deal of -ta-oufb-e in the--way-of getting a satisfactory reply from tne Government. The matter had' been -referred* •Eroan -one departmSJ!** to another, and ib was virtuallya.gameof seesaw. (Laughteov) -,' He understood now that; the matter had' been -referred to the Department of Roads*. -~ Mr- Wright hoped that no further delay would'occur. A -tender ihed been accepted-for cleaning out the -race, axed he would like an assurance that the work-would be proceeded with* at once. In' .regard to the. ter-dfers for cement, these should have been called for in the. Christchnrdb. papers to give everybody-a chance of tendering. On. .the motion of Mr Wright, seconded by Mr Lambie,i it was-decided to invite (tenders for -the requisite supply of cement, the Chairman -and Engineer to accept the same. A return asked for by Mr Johnston at last meeting, setting forth the moneys spent in the various -ridings, and other matters, was Md on the table. After considerable discussion, it was-resolved to refer -the return back for aanendments. t The question of the-destruction of small birds was -discussed, and it was decided to consider the whole matter later -in the season, when members could give their experiences in d-eaEng with the pcs:, -the committee to be -comprised of all tne membars of "the Council. A suggeortaonwas put forward by Mr Lambie that- the dog collars he of distinguishing colours to denote sporting doge -from "workers, but' it was decided' to postpone consideration till next year. The Coldstream Road Board wrote in regard to etoaig-htening the road to Ealing, -and the (>uncil decided to -refer -the matter back to ithe' Board for reconsideratjoh. The- Geraldine.County Council wrote in reference to a' complaintf as to the state of the stock bridge over the south branch of the Rangitata. -It was decided that the Council could not legally comply with, the (request.""
A circular was received from -the clerk Sv-denham Borough Council regarding the compilation of the valuation' rolls. The Council resolved to endorse the action of the -Sydenham Borough Council. Mr Wm. Anderson waited on the Coun. cil on behalf Fairfield Fiee-ang Works Company, asking for a loop line race.- The application was granted, subject to the company raying all costs of maintenance, and .annual charges for the entire length-. , Lewis Smith, Rakaia, applied for a pond service. The request was granted. It was resolvedi that Mr •Studholme, act on the same committees as Mr Buckley.
