There was splendid weather, an excellent" wicket, and a large attendance on the second day of the match between England and New South Wales. The partnership between Gregory and Noble dissolved after eight had beeft added to the over-night score, Noble mishitting Jessop into Lilley'e hands, and leaving the score at cix wickets for 345. Carter, who went in next, opened with great confidence, several fine, clean strokes placing him in double figures. He was anxious | to win his spurs in international cricket with a view to his chance as second wicketkeeper with the next Australian eleven on their visit to England. Both batsmen punished Jessop heavily, and he gave way to McGahey. Garter then tried a run off a light tap, but Quaife got in a fast return to the bowler, who threw down the wicket. Seven wickets for 391. Clarke partnered Gregory, and commenced a lively innings. The fourth century appeared for shrs 40min work. Clarke batted vigorously, and soon had 25 on the board, but Gregory closed a fine display in an unsatisfactory way. Clarke bit one to McGahey, who checked, but did not hold it. Gregory ran half way up the. pitch, and Quaife, who followed up, got the] ball back to the bowler, and Gregory retired. He played a faultless innings, hit fifteen 4's, and batted 3hrs 48min. Score— eight wickets for 417. 'Kermode followed. After lunch Clarke,-within a few minutes of the resumption of play, got his leg in front of the wicket—nine for 432. Hayward and Maclaren commenced the first innings of the Englishmen, with a heavy task set them. They opened slowly, but after 20 minutes' play warmed up and rattled up 50 on the board .in as -many minutes, Clarke and Mcßeth bowling. Hayward opened his shoulders to the former and lifted him into the smokers' reserve for 5. The fielding was patchy, and at times absolutely bad. At 70 Kermode deposed Clarke, and both batsmen, hitting the new fast-bowler for frequent fours, the century came up in 88 'minutes. Hopkins then relieved Mcßeth, Noble taking) Kermode's end, Maclaren having knocked a dozen off the latter's final over. Maclaren scored well off Hopkins, leg-glancing him repeatedly, and gave a magnificent display of free cricket. The bowling was tied up, and lacked devil, Noble getting practically no work on. At 154 Mcßeth was tried again in place >of Hopkins. Maclaren brought his century in view, and received a great ovation. It occupied two hours ten minutes. Hayward continued to bat splendidly, though he scored less rapidly than his skipper. At 165 Kermode relieved Noble. Maclaren gave a chance when his score was at 106, but Trumper misjudged the direction of the ball, and failed to run up to it. Trumper was the sixth bowler tried, replacing Mcßeth at 190. The second century was reached in two hoars thirtynine minutes. Hayward , was cheered, having recorded a chancelese century in three hours.
