BOWLING.

TODRK-AMBNT AT DUNEDIN.

A OHRISTOHURCH PLATER "TONS THE CHAMPIONSB3SI SINGLES.. (SPECIAL TO "T»US,EKBSS.") DUNEDIN, January 31. With the exception of the first day splendid weather prevailed for the bowling tournament, which was concluded this evening. Much interest was tafcfn in the matches all through, and the various wins were well deserved. The semi-final of the rinks was commenced shortly after nine o'clock.this morning, Allnutt (Roslyn) meeting Carswell (Taieri), and Peake (Dunedin) meeting Gow (Timaru).

In the match Peake v. Gow, Timaru started away with a good lead, the score at the seventh head being 11 to 2 in favour of the visitors. After this Dunedin began to pick up, and at the nineteenth head had almost equalised matters, the score then standing at 19 to, 20. The visitors were, however, successful in getting a couple of singles, and finished off with a majority of three points. Peake was not f>orticufarly well supported by •Mβ'men in the earlier part of the game. Gow played consistently, and received more support from his players. The game between Carawell and Allnutt ■was a closely contested one, neither side being able to claim any material advantage at any period of tne play. At the seventh head the game stood 6 to 8. Roslyn was then leading, and on the fourteenth head 'being reached the same team had still a majority, though only of three. From this time out the Taieri players began to get the mat, and iv the four heads put together 7 shots, winning by 3 points. The play all through was of a rather more than average merit. After'lunch, the final in the singles and doubles were commenced.

The play in the singles Ibetween W. Barnefct (Cbristchorch) and H. W. Reid (Kaituna) was a runaway game Ipr the former. Ait the seventh, head, he had scored 12 to Reid's 1, and at the fourteenth 22 to his opponent's 3. The game at this stage was hopelessly lost to Reid, but he elected to play it out. Hβ.picked up a little after that, but only succeeded in putting up the small total of 5 altogether, as against Barnettfe 2EL_. It was a. drawing game froni the start to the finish, and iJarnett's play was consistently good throughout. He played with his head, and in fact never was ■very far away from the kitty. Reid, on the other hand, though he got the length Very well, was always inclined to play narrow. The win was a very popular one, the veteran Christchurch player' being loudly applauded. The final of the doubles took over three hours to play. ' Great interest was centred in the meeting between. Bowieli and Carawell (Taieri), and Bewley and Evans (Caledonian). The Caledonian men started away with a substantial lead, and. were' ■both playing steadily. Howell and Carswell, on tine obher hand, -were not playing up to form, both HowelTs drawing and C&rtsweU'e driving (being faulty* From the 7th to 14ttb head *he Taieri j>layers ..were, always 5 and ,6 (behind, but then, their" play 'improved considerably, Howell seldom being far flfway from tibe kitty in leading, and CarswelTe raking slhots toeing much more iproductdve of good titan previously. They managed to bring .fcbe last 7 'heads to get in Z and 4, the latter playing them on even terns witih inheir opponents. They then proceeded to outclass diem, and finished up •with a niajoriity of 6,. Bewley and Evans failing to soore eJter tlbe head. It -was 4.15 o'clock before tihe final of the rinks' tournament was commenced between Gow (Tiaoaru) and Carawell (Taieri). Gow ■went off with a slight lead. CarsweH immediately after got five, which made mat--tew even. On tfae Wi head being played the ■teams still were equal', but adter this •Timaru began itofadl away sadly,. The iTaieri players continued to pile up their eoore, and finished m> witlh 27 to their opponents 12. Cairsweil and Howell again .played particularly well, as . also did Gow.' The letter's supporter's <had a more or leas tendency to play heavy. Several heads played were remurkaibly fine ones, but otSbera again were just as wide. It was a , quarter past seven 'before the lauSb bowl was sent down. Dusk having set in, it was decided to postpone tire match between Louie-' son and Howell for the tMrd place in the Singles until the morning. v '"The visitors were entertained at a smoke' concert Ita-night;, and'will be entertained" by' Mr A.
