A PROTEST FROM GISBORNE.
(PBXSS ASSOCIATION TKLEORAM.) ' January 31.. A puhlic meeting was held to-night re stoppage of jrailwav works. A resolution wae passed to the following effect:—"That this (meeting regrets the Government found it necessary, in order to keep -within, safe financial Jiajit*, to stop all vroxk opon tfhe Gis/borne-Karafca railway, and -urges., tzhat the work be. resumed at the earliest possible moment prudent finance will fallow y that wfoat. am emphatically needed in, dfoie- distriot are railroads to carry the produce of the interior to the ports; that jevery year valuable timber is'being destroyed which,, if reserved,.-would form a most "valuable, ooionial asset; that it is • matter requiring the ' greatest consideration, .before rolling sUxk is purchased -whether it would not be better even now to revert to #ie original proposal of the Hon. J.
