"THE MESSIAH."
TO THE KDMOB OS , TEE FRES3, >.*.'.' Sir, —I am sure- all -.jwho-heard the performance of "The Messiah" will regret your somewhat -unjust report- of. it; Your mtie'e method is partly to. damn wdth'fairit praise, as in the case of'.iMx Collier, and partly to misrepresent, as in the'case of - Mr Aruhur Merton; Because Mr Collier did not scream.. and perspire,- therefore, "he lacks the nebessary dramatic -vigour," whatever thai means; and because MrMerton did not b&l----•low like an iU-tireated bull',fiiierieforehetj>o is damned. Having said that Mr Mertoa's voice was rather light for the Oauterhury Hall your jsritic would 9iaye\sa/id eaoagh by way of'disparagement. It was unfair of him to say nothing at »31 about Mi , Merton's very artistic "singing." To most of the audience I am sure it vras a treat t» hear the runs—<by which tike -buss solos in "The Messiah" are characterised—given with such'finish. I think we have had ; rather a false ideal of 'base singing put before us; we ibave been taught to mistake, "bullocking" and mere noise for music. I am afraid your musical critic does not recognise "einging" When he hears it.—Yours* etc., T. W. CANE. Christclhuroh, December 20th, 1901.
